AromaPrime Helps Stimulate Memories in Residents with Dementia

Not many people know that AromaPrime smells are a great benefit in healthcare environments, particularly where dementia is concerned. Healthcare Homes’ Blandford Grange uses AromaPrime’s Aroma Cubes to stimulate memories among its residents with dementia.

When residents sniff a Coal Fire cube, it can remind them of the fireplace at their home during youth, or the Teapot cube might remind them of settling into their first home, allowing wonderful conversations to flow. Human smell bulbs connect to the parts of the brain that process memory and emotion; this allows residents with dementia to access some of the oldest of memories in a powerful way that isn’t always possible with images, touch or sound.

However, Lead Activity Coordinator Bridget Townsend tells us that looking through photographs, reading old newspapers and singing old songs are still wonderful tools. “Sound and smell are especially brilliant for people with poor eyesight, and the Aroma Cubes conjure all sorts of fantastic reminiscing in small social groups.”
