AromaPrime: The Go-to Museum Scent Experts Since 1968

Since AromaPrime was set up in 1968, then officially founded by 1973, our main customer sector has been museums.

Today, we pride ourselves on our expertese when it comes to applying scents in museum environments, whether it be for evoking emotions, communicating information memorably, or simply to help visitors imagine themselves in a different environment.

Early on, our founder Fred Dale would provide pleasant aromas for care homes, which is what led him to experiment with nostalgic scents for elderly residents to experience. Around this time, Fred was approached to create 'the smell of poverty' for historic cottages at a nearby museum. Successful assignments like these equipped Fred with the knowledge and experience to tackle the huge task of scenting Jorvik Viking Centre's recreated Viking village in the early 1980s, and the legendary 'Jorvik smellscape' that followed further cemented AromaPrime's role as a reliable scent supplier for educational and heritage attractions.

Scents
Over the decades, AromaPrime has grown a vast collection of off-the-shelf scents relevant to various educational topics. These have been created with care and attention to historical records whenever relevant. Examples include Egyptian Mummy, Wartime Bunker, Phosgene Gas and Roman Garum. We can also create bespoke blends whenever a project requires it.

Smell Stations
We are happy to advise on the best approaches in terms of conservation, and smell stations are often an excellent choice for controlling scents. Whether you just want a traditional 'smell box' or even a flask that puffs out air, we can suggest the steps to take. Clients including National Trust and the British Museum have successfully used our Aroma Blocks for their own smell stations.

Ambient Scenting
Spreading scents through the air is a popular approach for theatrical sets, creating a lifelike atmosphere. Our scent machines offer diffusion options for small spaces, large spaces and outdoor areas.
