The First Ever INTERNATIONAL THEMED SMELL DAY!

Our scent consultant Liam R. Findlay has recently announced the debut of International Themed Smell Day, 11th July!

Overview

This occasion has been established to celebrate the diverse uses of smells in theme parks, museums and other engaging experiences that tell stories according to a theme. It is a non-commercial endeavour, organised outside of work, spurred by passion for the practice.

Get involved!

During July, everyone is encouraged to share their themed smell projects, or encounters with themed smells, using #InternationalThemedSmellDay.

There will also be events to mark the occasion, including the online Using Smells in Museums event, taking place on 25th July at 5pm BST, which will involve talks from a variety of curators and designers.

Why July?

11th July was when the Timber Mountain Log Ride opened at Knott's Berry Farm in 1969. This was possibly the world's first theme park ride with a themed smell!

Liam says: "Themed smells are used in so many exciting ways. Some are recreations of smells that are otherwise extinct, some are included in fantastically fun smell stations, some are expelled in dark rides from fabulous 'smellitzers' created in-house ... So much creativity and pioneering design work goes into olfactory storytelling, and this is a day to celebrate that work!"
